“Writing without revising is the literary equivalent of waltzing gaily out of the house in your underwear.” —Patricia Fuller

Comprehensive short-form review

The shorter the copy, the more an error stands out—and often, it’s short pieces that are the most subject to error. Put your best foot forward by making sure your text is free of mistakes in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. This service is appropriate for advertisements of all kinds, menus, business cards, coupons, billboards, job postings, blog posts under 300 words, and more. ($20–$40 per project)

Are you using your semicolons properly? Are there typos or homophones in your manuscript? In fiction, does a character have blue eyes on one page and green eyes on another? Copyediting will check your grammar, punctuation, spelling, and word usage as well as making sure there aren’t any continuity errors. (starting at 1.5¢/word)

The last step before publication, proofreading checks for mechanical errors such as typos, incorrect punctuation, and word confusion. When applicable, I will also check for layout errors such as word stacks, rivers, widows and orphans, bad word breaks, and caption or directional mismatching. However, I generally won’t correct grammar or consistency and I won’t make suggestions for better wording your text—for that, you need a copyedit. (starting at 1¢/word)

Developmental editing

Maybe you want some in-depth critique of your work—a developmental edit evaluates things like organization, sentence structure, and quality of writing. For fiction, I will make suggestions regarding plot, and character development; for nonfiction, I will look at argumentation and citations. (starting at $40.00/hr)
